Why Sudden Death Happens in Broilers and How to Prevent It

Sudden death in broilers happens mostly to fast-growing birds between 3–7 weeks.
They can look healthy in the morning and die suddenly in the afternoon.
The major causes are stress, heat, overfeeding, and heart failure.

Here’s what every broiler farmer should know 👇
MAIN CAUSES OF SUDDEN DEATH

  1. Heat Stress

Broilers don’t tolerate heat well.
Too much heat makes their heart fail suddenly.

Signs: panting, wings spread, gasping.

  1. Overfeeding / Feed Too Rich

When broilers eat too much high-energy feed, their body grows faster than their heart.
This leads to heart attack or flipped bird syndrome.

  1. Poor Ventilation

If fresh air is low and ammonia is high, the bird becomes stressed and collapses.

  1. Water Shortage

Even 1–2 hours without water increases the chance of sudden death in broilers.

  1. Disease Stress (CRD, Coccidiosis, Infections)

Sometimes birds look normal but have internal stress that weakens their organs.

  1. Sudden Loud Noise or Scare

Broilers can die when frightened their heart is already weak from fast growth.

HOW TO PREVENT SUDDEN DEATH

  1. Improve Ventilation

Open windows, raise roofing sheets slightly, or add nets.
Fresh air saves broilers fast.

  1. Control Heat
  • Use cold water
  • Add electrolytes / vitamin C
  • Reduce stocking density
  • Add extra fans or cross ventilation
  1. Reduce Feeding at Night

Avoid giving heavy feed late at night; their heart works too hard while sleeping.
Feed more during the early morning and afternoon.

  1. Provide Constant Clean Water

Never let broilers stay without water.
Use multiple drinkers to reduce stress.

  1. Add Garlic + Ginger Water Weekly

They help the heart, reduce stress, and improve breathing.

  1. Avoid Sudden Noise

Reduce loud sounds, banging doors, or chasing inside the pen.

  1. Add Salt-Sugar Water During Heat

1 teaspoon salt + 3 tablespoons sugar in 1 liter water.
This stabilizes them during heat periods.

  1. Keep Litter Dry

Wet litter increases ammonia and stress.

  1. Deworm & Treat Infections Early
