What You Need To Know About President Ruto’s Speechwriter

He is called Eric Ng’eno and is recognized for crafting many of President William Ruto’s most powerful speeches.

He is a lawyer by training. An alumnus of Alliance High School and Moi University, where he studied law before obtaining a Post-Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law and later a Master’s in Public Policy and Management from Strathmore Business School.

Before becoming known for speech-writing, he built a solid legal career, working in commercial, regulatory, legislative, and public policy matters and serving as a partner at Kipsang & Mutai Advocates.

His entry into government communication began around the 2007/08 post-election violence period, when he supported William Ruto during the national negotiations. In 2013, he joined the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU) as Senior Director in charge of Messaging under President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he served until 2020.

After the 2022 elections, he returned to State House as Messaging Secretary and President Ruto’s chief speechwriter.

Ng’eno is celebrated for his poetic rhetorical style, depth of policy understanding, and ability to translate complex technical information into accessible public messaging that reflects the president’s voice and cadence. He describes speech-writing as a collaborative process that merges research, technical policy briefs, and polished rhetorical craft. His work is credited with shaping major national and international addresses, including Ruto’s UN General Assembly speech. Ng’eno’s journey highlights the critical, often invisible role of professional communicators in shaping national narratives and political identity.
