South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been impeached by the National Assembly following his brief declaration of martial law earlier this month.
The impeachment motion passed with 204 votes in favor and 85 against, surpassing the required two-thirds majority.
As a result, President Yoon’s powers are suspended pending a Constitutional Court review, which has up to 180 days to decide whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. In the interim, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president.
The impeachment stems from Yoon’s December 3 martial law declaration, which was lifted after six hours due to parliamentary veto and public outcry. The move led to mass protests and a significant drop in his approval ratings.
