Iranian airlines have resumed flights to Najaf, Iraq, after Baghdad secured a U.S. exemption allowing sanctioned Iranian carriers to operate the route again.
The first flight, operated by Caspian Airlines, landed at Najaf International Airport on Sunday, October 4, at around 5:15 p.m. local time.
Under the agreement, Iranian airlines other than Mahan Air can operate up to 40 flights per day to and from Najaf.
The reopening restores an important air link used by religious pilgrims, students and patients traveling between Iran and Iraq.
The move also marks a limited easing of restrictions on Iranβs aviation links, despite Washingtonβs broader sanctions campaign against Tehran.
