MUSALIA MUDAVADI’S rich CV:
- Member of Parliament (MP) for Sabatia (1989 – 2002, 2007-2013)
Elected unopposed in a by-election to take the Sabatia Constituency seat vacated by his deceased father Moses Mudamba Mudavadi. He went on to win the seat in the 1992 and 1997 general elections, and 2007. - Minister for Supplies and Marketing (1989 – 1993)
- Minister for Finance (1993 – 1997)
Youngest Kenyan to hold the portfolio under President Moi. - Minister for Agriculture (1997 – 1999)
- Minister for Transport, Communications and Information (2000 – 2002).
He was appointed by late President Moi towards the end of his tenure as President. - Vice-President of Kenya (2002)
He was appointed Vice-President by President Daniel arap Moi in the twilight of Moi’s administration, serving for a brief period. At the time, he was one of the youngest people to hold that office. - Deputy Prime Minister (2008 – 2013) Following the post-election violence of 2007-2008, a power-sharing deal created the position of Prime Minister (for Raila Odinga) and two Deputy Prime Ministers. Mudavadi was appointed one of the two deputies.
- Minister for Local Government (2008 – 2012)
Concurrently with his role as Deputy Prime Minister, he oversaw the Ministry of Local Government. - Minister for Transport and Infrastructure (2012 – 2013)
He held this position in the Grand Coalition government after the 2007 election. - Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya (2022 – Present).
Appointed by President William Ruto after the 2022 general election. He also oversees the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
Honourable mentions:
In 2005 Mudavadi made a political comeback by joining Raila Odinga’s LDP in the NARC Coalition, and aligning himself with the winning ‘No’ side in that year’s Referendum on the proposed new Constitution. After the 2005 referendum, the โNoโ side formed the Orange Democratic Movement- Kenya (ODM-K). But after the ODM-K split, Mudavadi joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) where he rose to the Deputy Party Leader.
There is no doubt Musalia Mudavadi is one of the most decorated Luhyas but people like Oparanya, who have perfected in fighting him, cannot see him rise. Oparanya’s latest move is endorsing Prof. Kithure Kindiki for Deputy President over him.
