Update: Outspoken Ugandan Army Chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba Has Apologized To The United States After Mounting Calls For Sanctions

Outspoken Ugandan army chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has apologized to the United States after mounting calls for sanctions over alleged human rights abuses during Uganda’s disputed 2026 elections. In a statement on January 30, Muhoozi said he deleted earlier tweets and admitted he had been misinformed.

He said he had spoken with the U.S. ambassador and confirmed continued military cooperation. The apology followed diplomatic efforts by Uganda’s embassy in Washington, with Ambassador Adonia Ayebare saying ties remain strong. Pressure intensified after U.S. Senator Jim Risch urged President Donald Trump to impose sanctions, citing election violence and rights abuses.
