Rift Valley Supremacy Battle: Aaron Cheruiyot Camp Suffers Setback as Gideon Moi Emerges Frontrunner in Baringo Senatorial Race

Baringo County, Kenya — The recently concluded Baringo senatorial by-election has redrawn the political map in Rift Valley, exposing deep fissures within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and signaling the dramatic resurgence of former senator Gideon Moi.

The biggest political casualties were Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and his close allies. Daniel Kiptoo, widely seen as Cheruiyot’s protégé, and Wycliffe Kipsang Tobole, a known associate of Baringo North MP Hon. Joseph Makilap, both suffered resounding defeats. The outcome is being read as a significant rejection of the Cheruiyot-Makilap faction and including Hon. Musa Sirma the Baringo Parliamentary Group caucus leader, raising serious questions about their once-firm grip on Baringo politics.

Once considered a UDA stronghold, the Baringo race has now revealed a fractured political landscape, where internal party rivalries are shaping the future more than opposition movements. The shifting tides have notably favored a rival faction aligned with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi. Their allies, including Hon. Reuben Kiborek and veteran politician Hon. William Kamket whose favored candidate Vincent Chemitei took a commanding lead in five out of the six constituencies in Baringo, played strategic roles in shifting voter sentiment away from Cheruiyot’s camp.

Yet beyond the UDA factional fights, one figure has quietly emerged as the most significant beneficiary of the unfolding drama: Gideon Moi.

The scion of Kenya’s second president, Daniel arap Moi, Gideon has largely maintained a low political profile since 2022. But the by-election has reawakened deep local support for the KANU chairman, with many voters and political analysts now identifying him as the most likely candidate to clinch the senatorial seat in the upcoming general election—should he choose to run.

“Gideon has always commanded deep respect in Baringo, and the chaos within UDA is creating the perfect vacuum for his comeback,” said a Baringo Mp who does not wish to be quoted. “This by-election has laid bare the fault lines within UDA, and Gideon is the only one who can rise above the noise to offer steady leadership.”

With voter fatigue over UDA’s internal feuds growing, Moi’s legacy and perceived statesmanship are quickly becoming assets. His political machinery remains intact, with long-time loyalists ready to mobilize. Grassroots support—particularly among moderate and older voters—is steadily consolidating around his potential candidacy.

The collapse of support for the Arror bloc, led by Makilap and Tobole, is another signal that older alliances are fading, and voters are craving stability and credible leadership.

“This is Gideon’s moment,” a respected Baringo elder remarked. “He doesn’t even need to campaign like the rest. People are watching and waiting. Many are ready to bring him back.”

As the supremacy battle in the Rift Valley enters a new phase, Gideon Moi’s potential return to the Senate is no longer speculation—it’s a political reality in the making. Whether he announces his bid or not, his shadow now looms large over Baringo, and indeed the Rift Valley at large.
