UPDATE: The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has approved 259 claims valued at Sh83.65 million under Phase VI.
The panel’s chairperson, Makau Mutua says the claims cover various forms of harm suffered by civilians and uniformed officers during the protests
The largest category is minor injuries, which accounts for 133 verified claims. Each claimant in this category is set to receive Ksh50,000, translating to Ksh6.65 million.
A further 54 victims with moderate injuries have been allocated Ksh500,000 each, bringing the total for the category to Ksh27 million.
The Panel also verified 35 claims involving severe injuries, with each claimant allocated Ksh1 million. The category accounts for Ksh35 million.
Four victims classified under aggravated injury will receive Ksh2 million each, amounting to Ksh8 million.
Another two aggravated-injury claims have been allocated Ksh1.5 million each, totalling Ksh3 million, while one claimant will receive Ksh2.5 million.
The Panel has also approved 30 claims for economic loss, with each claimant allocated Ksh50,000, bringing the total compensation under this category to Ksh1.5 million.
