Satellite imagery has revealed eight K-8 light attack and training aircraft and more than 20 support vehicles at a newly established China-Laos military facility near Vientiane.
The Ban Keun facility is still under construction, but its runway, taxiway and expanding infrastructure have raised concerns that it could evolve into China’s first fully fledged overseas military base in Southeast Asia.
The site is officially described as a joint support and training center for China and Laos, including an aviation academy for pilot training.
Analysts are closely watching for the arrival of air-defense systems, fuel and ammunition storage, and surveillance facilities that could indicate a broader military role.
The development would significantly deepen China’s military presence in mainland Southeast Asia.
