US President Donald Trump has announced a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would grant the United States permanent control over security-related operations on the strategically important Arctic island.

The proposed agreement would allow Washington to expand its military presence in Greenland while restricting adversaries, including Russia and China, from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments without US approval.

The deal is expected to be signed during next week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, but it remains subject to approval by the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of Greenland’s people to self-determination.

The agreement would strengthen US military access and defense cooperation in the Arctic without transferring sovereignty over Greenland to the United States.
