Kenyan Politics Has Entered The “hold my tea” Phase Again

According to The Star, the Linda Mwananchi faction of ODM led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is reportedly exploring possible alliances with opposition heavyweights like Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka.

Yes. You read that correctly.

In what feels like the political version of “the enemy of my enemy is my WhatsApp group admin,” Gachagua is said to have offered to shelve his own presidential ambitions and instead back a strong Sifuna-camp candidate, all in the grand mission of unseating President William Ruto.

This is either the beginning of a masterstroke or the trailer to Season 7 of Kenya’s longest-running drama series: Coalition Wars.

On paper, it sounds bold. Rally the troops. Combine forces. Create anti-Ruto momentum. Turn rallies into mini-festivals of resistance. Bring out the whistles, the chants, the matching caps. Political chemistry experiment underway.

But behind the scenes? It’s giving “high-risk investment with questionable returns.”

Because while rallies energize supporters and create those cinematic drone shots of cheering crowds, analysts are already clearing their throats. The move, they warn, could split the faction further and alienate core ODM loyalists who are still trying to understand whether the party is negotiating with UDA, fighting UDA, befriending UDA, or sending UDA a “we need to talk” text.

Imagine being a loyal ODM supporter right now. You wake up, open your phone, and the political script has changed again. Yesterday’s rival is today’s strategic partner. Today’s handshake could be tomorrow’s heartbreak. The only constant is confusion.

And let’s talk about this gamble.

Gachagua shelving his ambitions? In Kenyan politics, that’s like a striker saying, “I’ll just provide assists.” It sounds noble. It sounds mature. It also sounds like something that might come with footnotes in very small print.

Meanwhile, Sifuna signaling openness to talks shows he understands the mathematics of politics. Numbers matter. Coalitions matter. Momentum matters. But so does party unity. And ODM is not exactly a small chama ya merry-go-round where everyone fits in one photo.

The risk?
Build anti-Ruto momentum and look like the architect of a new opposition wave.
Or ignite deeper ODM rifts and end up isolated, explaining strategy on talk shows every Sunday evening.

Kenyan politics has always loved dramatic plot twists. But this one feels like assembling a band where half the members once wrote diss tracks about each other.

Will it become a lifeline that reshapes 2027 calculations?
Or a landmine that detonates in the middle of internal party meetings?

For now, rallies continue. Speeches grow louder. Promises grow bigger. And political analysts are polishing their “we warned you” statements just in case.

One thing is certain: in Kenya, alliances are never permanent, ambitions are rarely retired, and the political chessboard is always one handshake away from being flipped over.

Stay tuned. The next episode could drop before the ink on this one dries.
