Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has unveiled the first political candidate under his Youth 47 Movement, signaling a bold step into Kenya’s electoral politics.

Speaking to the public on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Omondi announced that Charles Kiura will contest the Muminji Ward seat in Mbeere North, Embu County, during the February 26 by-election. He described the move as a milestone in his campaign to empower young Kenyans to take charge of leadership.

“The idea is to birth a new generation of leadership,” Omondi said, adding that Kenya needs fresh ideas and a new political direction.

Launched on January 13, 2026, the Youth 47 Movement plans to support youth candidates across all 47 counties. Omondi has positioned it as a grassroots empowerment platform rather than a traditional party.

During campaigns in Muminji Ward, Omondi praised Kiura as a motivated Gen Z leader with ideas to transform the area. This marks Omondi’s first direct involvement in electoral politics as a movement leader.
