Somalian Woman: I am a US citizen. I don’t need to carry around an ID in my home. This is my home.

ICE Officer: Ma’am, we’re doing an immigration check. We’re doing a citizen check, and we’re asking you where you were born.

Somalian Woman: This is where I belong. This is my home, and I—

ICE Officer: Ma’am, you can belong here, but where were you born?

Somalian Woman: I’m not gonna give you an ID.

ICE Officer: Then we’re gonna put you in the vehicle until we can ID you.

Somalian Woman: I belong here. I should be walking around here free. I shouldn’t be afraid in my life at this point.

ICE Officer: Ma’am, do you have an ID to give us?

Somalian Woman: You’re making me scared—

ICE Officer: Yes, you’re correct.

Somalian Woman: You’re making me scared. You’re making me panic.

ICE Officer: Ma’am, where were you born?

Somalian Woman: This is my home. I am a US citizen. I am a US citizen. I don’t think so you have a right to picture me while I’m in my home or walking around in my home. This is not acceptable. You guys, you’re terrorizing people, and it’s not acceptable.

ICE Officer: Ma’am, where were you born?

Somalian Woman: It doesn’t matter where I was born. I belong here. I am a US citizen. What else can I say? I am a citizen. This is my home. Minneapolis—

ICE Officer: You realize that if you lie that you’re a US citizen—

Somalian Woman: Minneapolis is my home. Minneapolis is my home. I belong here. I’m sorry. I belong here. I’m not gonna take out an ID.

Here’s the part many people don’t understand:

👉 Claiming U.S. citizenship when you are not a citizen is a serious federal crime and grounds for deportation.
👉 Officers are legally allowed to detain someone temporarily to establish identity if they refuse to cooperate.
👉 Photographing a subject during a stop is standard procedure and can be used for identity verification, including facial recognition.
