When I was criticizing as an outsider, I didn’t understand Nairobi. Now I do as I have now served as an MCA in Nairobi City County Assembly. City Hall is a maze many of you will never understand.
Even a good number of MCAs serve for 5 years without getting to understand how the maze works. Some even leave poorer and even mentally unhealthy than they came.
Since the advent of devolution, Nairobi has had 5 governors.
- Evan’s Kidero
- Mile Sonko
- Speaker Benson Mutura
- Anne Kananu
- Johnson Sakaja.
Out of the 5, only Governor Evans Kidero tried to deploy processes and procedures which could be relied on by Nairobians.
He came so early but nobody has since collected the revenue he collected or even matched the kind of systems he put in place to support service delivery in the city.
Kidero put a physical development plan which the assembly passed. Kidero commissioned a data centre. Kidero used CSR to build schools from scratch. Kidero was building a revenue system and ERP owned by Nairobians. Successive governors have killed the ERP idea. Kidero even deployed cameras to monitor crime. Nairobi doesn’t need a politician. Nairobi need a corporate head who has the thick skin to handle the cartels but also realize that he/she must work with all to deliver a modern smart city. Read more.
