Hackers hijacked digital billboards in Egypt, Malaysia and Brazil on Thursday to display sexually explicit videos, with claims of similar attacks in Iraq and China.
In Giza, drivers on one of Cairo’s busiest highways stopped to film a giant screen showing the footage. Malaysian and Brazilian authorities shut down affected screens and opened investigations.
A Telegram group called Leakers$ claimed responsibility, saying it exploited a weakness in software used to send content to LED screens and found thousands of unprotected systems in a two-hour scan.
It said “anyone with two brain cells” could have done it. Egypt’s Interior Ministry said legal proceedings have begun. The group says it isn’t seeking ransom.
