A heartbreaking moment unfolded at the Milimani Law Courts today as Melida Auma, the mother of the late Sharon Otieno, made an emotional plea for mercy for former Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
Instead of calling for the maximum punishment, Melida stunned the courtroom by asking the court to consider a non-custodial sentence, saying Obado should remain free so he can help provide housing, transport and financial support for Sharon’s three children.
With tears and deep pain, she told the court:
“We forgive Governor Obado. Don’t crucify him. Give him a non-custodial sentence.”
She further pleaded: “If he goes for death or life sentencing, I’ll see another death in my life. Do me a favour; just don’t take him to jail.”
The court will now take time to consider the prosecution’s submissions, mitigation and victim impact statements before delivering the final sentence.
High Court Judge Cecilia Githua has set November 27, 2026, at 10:30 AM for the sentencing. Until then, the convicts will remain in remand.
For Sharon’s mother, this was not a plea for revenge — it was a painful appeal centered on the future of the three children Sharon left behind.
