The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine has been without external electricity for more than a week, forcing the facility to rely on emergency diesel generators to maintain cooling and other critical safety systems, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

All six reactors at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant remain shut down but still require continuous cooling. The IAEA said the plant currently has enough diesel fuel for approximately 10 days, making the restoration of a reliable external power supply increasingly urgent.

The loss of external power was linked to military activity in the area, while damage to transmission lines has prevented the plant from reconnecting to the grid. The IAEA is seeking a localized ceasefire to allow repairs to the power lines.

The agency also reported several drone-related incidents at the site this week, further highlighting the fragile security situation surrounding the facility.
