Young Kenyans Are Earning, Hustling, and Still Struggling to Stay Afloat

A new Old Mutual Financial Wellness Monitor 2025 report paints a worrying picture of the financial reality facing Kenyans aged 20 to 29.

According to the report, 43% of young Kenyans borrow money to meet their daily expenses, while another 26% borrow to fund businesses or purchase stock.

Even more striking, despite 83% remaining optimistic about their financial future, only 36% have enough savings to survive for three months without an income.

But the numbers also show that young Kenyans are not simply sitting back.

97% have savings goals, while 39% own or co-own businesses, showing a strong desire to build financial independence. However, only 26% are actively saving for retirement, meaning many are focused on surviving and building today while postponing the future.

Mobile money loans remain the most common source of credit, accounting for 39% of borrowing.

The reality is clear: many young Kenyans are ambitious, entrepreneurial and hopeful—but the cost of living, limited income and easy access to short-term credit are making financial stability increasingly difficult.

The question is: Are young Kenyans building wealth, or are they simply borrowing their way through life?
