This project is part of a broader initiative by the Kiambu County Government to build 28 modern markets across the county to improve trade infrastructure and provide a dignified environment for small-scale traders
Before construction began, Governor Kimani Wamatangi held a consultation meeting with traders in 2024 and agreed to facilitate their relocation to a nearby site, which was prepared in late 2025.
The construction phase alone has engaged over 100 local workers, providing immediate job opportunities for residents.
Once complete, the county government will ensure that only legitimate traders are allocated spaces through a free and fair process.
The market project is part of a larger plan to elevate Thika to “Smart City” status.
