Russia is preparing to consider deploying “armed mobile escort units” to protect Russian-flagged commercial vessels, as security risks to maritime trade continue to escalate.
The proposal also includes installing special defensive systems on board ships, aimed at countering emerging threats targeting civilian shipping routes. The move reflects growing concern over the vulnerability of commercial vessels operating in contested waters.
While no final decision has been announced, the plan signals a potential shift toward militarizing the protection of Russia’s merchant fleet—blurring the line between civilian and military operations at sea.
If implemented, the measure could further heighten tensions in key maritime corridors, where global trade flows remain increasingly exposed to conflict spillover.
