Nairobi streets plunged into chaos on Monday atmorning after Forward Travellers matatu operators blocked Outering Road at Kariobangi Roundabout, halting traffic completely. The road links eastern and northern parts of the city, leaving motorists and commuters stranded and long queues forming on feeder routes.
Thika Road also experienced severe gridlock, while sections of Tom Mboya Street in the CBD were blocked, disrupting buses to Umoja, Donholm, and Githurai. Eastlands commuters reported being dropped along Jogoo Road due to SACCO restrictions. The strike, initially suspended by the Federation of Public Transport Sector for dialogue, was ignored by some operators protesting the torching of their vehicles by boda bodas.
Authorities urge road users to seek alternative routes and allow extra travel time.
