Turji Bello, one of Nigeria’s most notorious bandit leaders, may have been killed in a targeted airstrike allegedly carried out in Sokoto State

Unconfirmed reports circulating online claim that Turji Bello, one of Nigeria’s most notorious bandit leaders, may have been killed in a targeted airstrike allegedly carried out in Sokoto State. As of the time of publication, neither the Nigerian government nor the United States authorities have officially confirmed the reports.

Turji Bello has been widely linked to years of violent attacks across Nigeria’s North West, particularly in Zamfara and Sokoto States. He was accused of leading armed groups responsible for mass killings, kidnappings, and large-scale extortion affecting both Christian and Muslim communities.

Among the incidents attributed to him are the January 2022 Zamfara massacre that reportedly left over 200 people dead, the December 2021 Sabon Birni bus attack in which dozens of passengers were burned alive, and a surge of violence between December 2024 and January 2025 involving the killing of farmers and the imposition of heavy “protection levies” on villages and local governments.

Bello was also known for using social media to openly display weapons, ransom money, and threats, making him one of the most visible bandit leaders in the region. Reports suggest he may have relocated to Sokoto while many of his fighters remained active in other conflict zones.
