UDA Withdraws From Kisa East By-Elections As Candidate Backs Rival

In a major political development, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has pulled out of the Kisa East ward by-elections set for November 27, 2025.

The decision came after UDA candidate James Shiraku withdrew from the race, declaring his support for Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) candidate Joel Ongoro Otwoma.

Shiraku, who had already begun campaigning, said the move followed consultations with party leadership. Speaking at a public gathering in Kakamega County on Wednesday, November 19, he confirmed his decision to support Ongoro, who has recently gained significant backing in the area.

“My name is James Shiraku. I was vying for the Kisa East seat, but I have agreed to support Honourable Ongoro,” he said.

Shiraku also revealed that his decision followed discussions with Khwisero Member of Parliament Christopher Aseka, who has been actively rallying support for Ongoro.

With Shiraku’s exit, Ongoro now faces ten other candidates for the MCA seat, with only seven days remaining before election day.

Among the contenders are DAP-Kenya’s Abraham Ayaya, Democracy for the Citizens Party’s Aduda Okwiri, ODM’s John Masetu, UDM’s Stephen Amwayi, and Agano Party’s David Muchelule.

The by-election was called to fill the seat left vacant by former Kisa East MCA Stephen Maloba, who died in 2023 after being reportedly stabbed at a political rally in Khwisero. Maloba succumbed to injuries despite attempts to rush him to Mbale Hospital.

Political analysts suggest Shiraku’s withdrawal could shift the dynamics of the race, consolidating support behind Ongoro and reducing competition for the MDG candidate.

The UDA is now expected to focus its resources on the Malava Parliamentary seat, whose election is scheduled on the same day, November 27.
