RIP: Eulogy For Janet Wanja Mungai

Janet Wanja Mungai, born on 24th February 1984 at Mater Hospital, Nairobi, was the third child of WO1 John Mungai (RTD) and Serah Mungai. She grew up in Kahawa Garrison and attended Kenyatta University Primary School and Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School, where her volleyball journey began. Her talent blossomed under Coach Juma Walukhu at Kahawa Barracks, leading her to a stellar volleyball career.

Wanja represented Kenya at the Athens 2004 Olympics at just 20 years old, becoming a celebrated setter for the Malkia Strikers for 15 years. She won five African Nations Championship titles and participated in global tournaments like the FIVB World Championships and World Grand Prix. She also played for Kenya Pipeline, KCB, APR (Rwanda), and professionally in the UAE, retiring in 2020 after an illustrious career.

Beyond volleyball, Wanja was deeply rooted in her faith, influenced by her mother’s devout Christianity. She participated in church and youth activities at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kahawa Garrison and later at Chrisco Church. A vibrant and social person, Wanja was known for her beauty, love for singing, and outgoing nature, which made her a beloved figure on and off the court.

Wanja remained connected to her Kahawa Garrison community, participating actively in the GAFFE TRIBE welfare group. She will be remembered as a decorated athlete, devout Christian, and warm-hearted individual who inspired many.
