On January 19, 2025, Richard Raymond Otieno spent the evening at Alpha’s Club in Elburgon town, enjoying a game of pool with friends. Around 11 PM, he decided to head home. Upon reaching his gate, he was viciously attacked by unknown assailants, suffering severe head injuries. He was quickly taken to Elburgon Sub-County Hospital for emergency treatment, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations into the case are advancing steadily. On January 24, 2025, a team from the Homicide Unit, along with forensic experts from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), visited the Kericho Referral Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy was conducted.

The autopsy was overseen by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, with assistance from Dr. Grace Midigo. Representing the deceased’s family was Dr. Ngurungu, also a Pathologist. The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) was represented by Commissioner Kamanda Mucheke. Additionally, officials from the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) and Red Cross counsellors were present.

The autopsy revealed several critical findings: two significant slash wounds on the occipital region, one stab wound on the upper forehead, swollen eyelids, abrasions on the chin and nose, extensive haemorrhage, a fragmented occipital skull fracture, and severe brain haemorrhage.

The expert opinion determined that the cause of death was a severe head injury caused by both blunt and sharp force trauma. The team collected body samples for further forensic analysis, including toxicological and DNA analysis.

Meanwhile, the investigating team has identified several individuals of interest who may provide crucial insights into this case as it continues to record statements from witnesses.

As the investigation continues, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations reassures the public that every effort will be made to conduct a thorough and professional investigation to identify those responsible and ensure justice is served.

We appeal to the public to remain patient and share any information they may have regarding the incident with the investigating team.
