The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson is determined through a voting process conducted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
After the voting, the winner is determined based on the following criteria:
- Two-Thirds Majority Rule – A candidate must secure at least two-thirds (66.67%) of the votes from AU member states to be declared the winner.
- Multiple Rounds of Voting – If no candidate attains the two-thirds majority in the first round, the voting continues in subsequent rounds, eliminating the candidate with the fewest votes in each round.
- Final Round and Deadlock – If the process reaches the final two candidates and no one achieves the required two-thirds majority after seven rounds, the election is suspended. A new election is held later, allowing new candidates to enter the race. The Vice chairperson will hold the chairperson seat for 1 year until elections are done again.
This process ensures that the AUC Chairperson has broad support from AU member states, reinforcing their legitimacy in leading the Commission.
The African Union (AU) has 55 member states & 49 states are set to vote. To determine a two-thirds majority, we calculate:
⅔×49 = 33
Since votes are counted in whole numbers, the required two-thirds majority is 33 votes.
Thus, a candidate for the AUC Chairmanship must secure at least 33 votes from AU member states to win. All the best Hon Raila Odinga.
