Clement Omondi, a 33-year-old from Nairobi, left his new girlfriend, Jackline, stunned after he disappeared in the middle of their dinner at an upmarket city hotel—leaving her with a bill of KSh 50,000.

The two had only been dating for a month when Jackline decided to show up with five of her friends, assuming Clement would happily cover the night’s lavish expenses. Partway through the evening, Clement excused himself to “take a phone call” and never came back. By closing time, Jackline and her friends were stuck with the hefty bill. Hotel staff, unconvinced by her explanations, reportedly held her overnight as she tried to sort out the mess.

Clement later admitted his disappearing act was deliberate. Despite being financially well-off, he explained that he refuses to spend recklessly just to impress. “It wasn’t about whether I could pay—it was about principle,” he said.
