How To Plant And Space Irish Potatoes For Maximum Yield

  1. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀: Use certified seed potatoes that are free from diseases and viruses. Cut the seed potatoes into 1-2 inch pieces, making sure each piece has at least two eyes.
  2. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹: Irish potatoes grow best in loose, well-draining soil with a pH between 5.0-6.0. Add organic matter, such as compost or manure, to improve soil fertility and texture.
  3. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀: Dig furrows or trenches that are 4-6 inches deep, spaced 2-3 feet apart. Place the seed potatoes in the furrows, eye-side up, with about 12 inches between each seed potato.
  4. 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹: Cover the seed potatoes with 3-4 inches of soil. As the potato plants grow, gradually add more soil until the trenches are filled.
  5. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
Irish potatoes need consistent moisture and nutrients throughout the growing season. Water your plants regularly and fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer at planting and during the growing season.
  6. 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀: As your potato plants grow, mound soil around the stems to cover any exposed tubers. This will prevent the potatoes from turning green and increase yield.
