Kenya is mourning the loss of Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, a trailblazing leader and pioneer of the Maendeleo ya Wanawake movement.
Her family confirmed that she passed away peacefully in her sleep while in North Carolina, U.S. In a heartfelt statement, they said, “With heavy hearts, the Asiyo family shares the profound loss of our cherished mother, Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo… Her presence and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
A fearless advocate for women’s rights, Asiyo made history in 1982 when she was elected Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo—one of the few women to hold such a position at the time.
