UPDATE: An athlete collapses and dies after competing in a scholarship trial at Kipchoge Stadium in Uasin Gishu County.

According to a police report, Joseph Hussein Njagi completed the 3,000-metre race at around midday and collapsed at the finish line.

Athletics officials rushed the 20-year-old to Uasin Gishu District Hospital to receive medical treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Njagi’s demise adds to the list of Kenyan athletes whose nascent careers were tragically cut short.
